TRISTAN DA CUNHA 1962 POTATO STAMPS REPRINT SHEETLET SIGNED BY ALLAN CRAWFORD
Potato Stamps sheetlet, featuring reprints of the 1d Rockhopper Penguin local use 'potato' stamps, signed by designer Allan Bryant Crawford (1912–2007). Scarce. Fresh and fine.
Note: the local use 'potato' stamps, so-called because islanders used potatoes as currency, were printed in sheets of 35 by Hortors Ltd of Johannesburg. The design formed the basis of a petition in 1946 to the Postmaster General in the UK for Tristan Da Cunha to issue stamps – the request was denied and it wasn't until 1952 that overprinted definitives of St Helena became Tristan Da Cunha's first official postage stamps
