BASUTOLAND 1906 (POSTMARK) BUTHA BUTHE
Cape of Good Hope 1d King Edward VII definitive, carmine shade, cabled anchor watermark, off-piece with part BUTHA BUTHE, BASUTOLAND type 1 circular cancel dated DE 12 06. This is the earliest recorded usage of the cancel (listed as 1907 in A H Scott's Cancellations & Postal Markings of Basutoland/Lesotho Post Offices). A wonderful proving piece. Generally fine used.
Note: stamps of Cape of Good Hope were used in Basutoland from 1876 followed, from 1910, by stamps of South Africa. It wasn't until December 1933 that Basutoland issued its own stamps
