NEW ZEALAND 1958 (VARIETY) 2D/1½D QUEEN ELIZABETH II SURCHARGED IN ERROR
2d/1½d Queen Elizabeth II definitive of 1953 surcharged in error (with larger 4.25 mm dot). Scarce. Fresh and fine. Mint never hinged. SG763b; SC320; CPN41a
Note: to cater for a shortfall of 2d stamps, the New Zealand Post Office arranged for withdrawn stock of the 1½d QEII definitive originally issued 1 December 1955 to be surcharged. Although similar to the 1½d issued in 1953, the 1955 version lacks stars in the lower right corner and the denomination is larger. A small quantity of the 1½d QEII definitive issued in 1953 was mixed in with the withdrawn stock and surcharged in error – the mistake was not noticed until examples appeared on the market from March 1958
